Central Park: The Heart of the Park

Here you'll find a country stroll in the heart of the city. Begin at Central Park West and West 77th Street (B, C, 1, 2, 3, or 9 train to 72nd Street). When you enter the park, cross the drive to the lakeside path for a view of the wooded "Ramble" to your left, boaters emerging from the lake's east arm to your right. A short distance on, a side road cuts uphill to the John Lennon memorial, directly across from the Dakota, where Lennon was shot in 1980. Return to the drive by way of Strawberry Fields, the well-tended garden established by Yoko Ono, Lennon's widow, and head east along the 72nd Street Transverse to Bethesda Fountain. Pause a moment to take in the view of Loeb Boathouse in the background, descend to the plaza, and make your way under the transverse to the Mall, one of the most pleasant places in the world to spend part of a Sunday afternoon. A free performance may be under way at the bandshell, or an impromptu amateur group may have settled in front of the carved benches that line the Mall. Stroll to the Poet's Circle at the far end, then turn right onto the path leading to the verdant patch of green known as the Sheep Meadow, once home to grazing livestock, now a sports- and picnic-free quiet zone favored by sunbathers and meditators. Tavern on the Green, where the New York Marathon concludes each fall, is directly across the drive, with exits to Central Park West at 66th and 67th Streets.
